Appointments to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission

Kim Howells, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Competition and Consumer Affairs, has announced details of a number of appointments made to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) over the past six months.

The MMC investigates and reports on matters referred to it relating to mergers, monopolies and anti-competitive practices, the regulation of utilities and the performance of public sector bodies. Under the provisions of the Competition Act 1998, the MMC is to be dissolved and its functions transferred to the Competition Commission, which will come into being on 1 April 1999. These appointments will transfer to the Competition Commission.

MMC Newspaper Panel

New Members

Eight new members have been appointed to the panel maintained by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in order to make appointments to the MMC (and from 1 April to the Competition Commission) for the purpose of newspaper merger references. The eight new members are Sarwar Ahmed, Linda Christmas, William Gibson, Gerry Holbrook, Joyce Hopkirk, Eve Pollard, Professor Donald Trelford and Charles Wilson. All eight members have been appointed to serve for three year terms.

Reappointed Members

Two members of the MMC Newspaper Panel, Geoffrey Copeman and Caroline Marland, have been reappointed to serve second three year terms on the panel from 9 October 1998.

Professor Jack Beatson, Graham Stacy, David Jenkins, Roger Munson and Dr Gill Owen have been reappointed to serve further three year terms from 13 December 1998, 15 December 1998, 1 January 1999, 1 February 1999 and 11 March 1999 respectively.
